A registration exam is a requirement for all new EMR, PCP and ACP applicants for registration with the Alberta College of Paramedics, except for those who are currently licensed in another province.
On Friday, June 19, 2020, the Council of the Alberta College of Paramedics (College) voted unanimously to approve the Canadian Organization of Paramedic Regulators examination as the approved registration examination required of all applicants applying to the general register of the College under the Health Professions Act part 2, 28(2)(a)(iii) and the Paramedics Profession Regulation section 3(b). The examinations are issued at two of the three currently recognized designations in Alberta:
- Primary Care Paramedic (PCP)
- Advanced Care Paramedic (ACP)
The EMR exam is still under development and more details will be share as soon as possible.

The College is in the process of refunding any applicant who previously paid for the Provincial Registration Examination. Refunds will be made back to the original form of payment and confirmation of will be sent once the refund has been processed. The clinical assessment portion for all three designations (EMR, PCP, ACP) is still suspended as the Council continues to deliberate on the best way to ensure all applicants are appropriately assessed as they begin practice in Alberta. For the time being, all applicants who meet registration requirements (have already passed the Alberta written exam or will pass the COPR exam) will move to the general register and have a condition on their practice permit that states they will be required to complete a College-approved skills assessment, at a time to be determined by the Registrar.
COPR has a whole page on their website dedicated to helping candidates prepare for the exam: https://www.copr.ca/examinations/preparing-for-the-examination/ You’ll also find the Examination Study Guide on this page.
