Continuing Competence Leave of Absence
The Continuing Competence Program engages regulated members in a professional practice model supporting competence and currency in practice; however, the College understands that there are circumstances that may prevent a regulated member from meeting continuing competence requirements.
Continuing Competence Leave of Absences are offered when a major event occurs in a regulated member’s life. Regulated members on a Continuing Competence Leave of Absence receive a credit adjustment for the time in which they are unable to practice. The intent is to relieve some stress around continuing competence requirements while they work through the event.
There are two main reasons in which regulated members can request a continuing competence credit reduction:
- Maternity/ Parental Leave
- Incapacity to Practice (Medical Leave)
Section 1(1)(s) of the HPA defines incapacitated as, “suffering from physical, mental or emotional condition or disorder or an addiction to alcohol or drugs as defined in the Pharmacy and Drug Act or other chemicals that impairs the ability to provide professional services in a safe and competent manner” this includes physical injury and mental crisis.
Short-term disability, long-term disability and stress leave are forms of medical leave.
A Continuing Competence Leave of Absence is granted up to 18 months and in extreme circumstances with the approval of the Registrar can be extended to a maximum of 24 months. Extreme circumstances commonly consist of regulated members who are receiving treatment for a severe physical injury, critical illness or mental health event. A Continuing Competence Leave of Absence is not intended to be an indefinite part of one’s registration.
Note: Requesting a Continuing Competence Leave of Absence does not interfere with any other College processes.
For each month a practitioner is on a Continuing Competence Leave of Absence, five credits will be adjusted from the continuing competence cycle in which the leave is taken.
Example 1) Maternity Leave February 13, 2017- February 26, 2018 (12 months x 5 credits) equals 60 credits adjusted on the 2017/2018 cycle.
Example 2) Medical Leave October 20, 2018- March 6, 2019 (5 months x 5 credits) equals 10 credits adjusted on the 2017/2018 cycle; 15 credits adjusted on the 2019/2020 cycle.
