Paramedicine is a regulated health profession under the Health Professions Act (HPA) and the Alberta College of Paramedics is the governing body for paramedicine in Alberta. The College serves in the interest of the public and public safety by enforcing regulations and upholding governing legislation.

To practice paramedicine or use the title of paramedic in Alberta, all Emergency Medical Responders (EMR), Primary Care Paramedics (PCP) and Advanced Care Paramedics (ACP) must hold an active practice permit from the Alberta College of Paramedics. A practice permit is your formal documentation that identifies you as a paramedic or EMR and lists any endorsements or conditions you must practice under or whether you need to work under supervision.

Alberta practice is based on the 2011 National Occupational Competency Profiles (NOCP) for Paramedics.
