Every profession regulated under the Health Professions Act (HPA) is required to maintain currency in their practice and knowledge through a Continuing Competence (CC) program.

The CC Program engages members in a professional practice model that supports currency in practice through enhancement and expansion of knowledge and skills. Continuing competence fosters individual improvement and growth of professional practice, enhancing the level of service and care provided to Albertans. All regulated members on the general register must meet the requirements of the (CC) program to renew their practice permit each year.

The CC cycle follows the membership year from October 1 to September 30. You must fulfill a minimum of 60 credits, 30 of which must be continuing education activities from the approved continuing education activities list below. Credits can only be applied to the cycle in which they were earned and cannot be pre-earned or carried over to a following cycle. It is a legislative requirement that you retain ALL documentation for a period of five years. You will not need to provide it to the College office unless you are contacted to participate in a Record Audit (more on this below).

If you are planning a leave of absence from the profession, you can request to have your credit requirements adjusted, otherwise you must maintain that same requirement for the membership year as usual.

Continuing education courses must be inclusive opportunities for all members. They cannot be exclusive opportunities for a specific group of regulated members.

To be considered continuing education, program and course providers must first seek approval from the College. In addition to the continuing education standards, all continuing education must offer skills and/or education for the purposes of expanding or refreshing the knowledge and/or skills of the paramedic practitioner who has already achieved entry to practice.

Note: Due to an increase in links not working or being changed by the provider resulting in virus warnings the College has removed the links. Thus, you will need to search for the provider on your browser or you can contact the Competence department at CC@ABparamedics.com.

Self-directed activities are professional development activities identified by you based on your specific interest and learning needs. These activities do not need to meet the College’s Continuing Education Standards.

Self-directed activities may pertain to current practice or future goals.

Self-directed activities must provide intellectual and/or practical knowledge that is relevant to your specific practice setting, or to your professional and ethical obligations in the provision of care. Workplace training, certification courses, participation in a working group or committee, research and development are all examples of self-directed activities.

To be considered continuing education, program and course providers must be approved by the College.

The College recognizes two types of continuing education providers:

  1. Education institutions (either already offer entry-to-practice education and those that do not)
  2. Seminar and conference providers who offer high-quality continuing education opportunities

CE providers or regulated members of the College may apply to have an activity approved for CE credit by using this CE Program Approval Application.

Questions and submissions can be emailed to CC@ABparamedics.com.

Continuing Competence activities are recorded in your member profile. In the member portal, the Continuing Competence page is the fifth page on the navigation bar. On this page you will find the form to add your CC activities for the current member year. More detailed instructions can be found here.

As outlined in the CC program, you must retain verifying documentation for every activity recorded, including any mandatory training activities. You are required to retain this documentation for a minimum of five years after the end of the CC year in which the document relates. For example, all documentation for the 2019-2020 CC year must be kept until the end of the 2024-2025 CC year.

You must provide supporting documentation when confirming your continuing competence records when selected for a CC record audit. Providing false or misleading information is considered unprofessional conduct. Supporting documentation must include the following:

  • Continuing Professional Development provider name and/or branding
  • Name of activity undertaken
  • Your name
  • Date completed
  • Number of hours awarded (for Self-Directed activities)

Clear examples of supporting documentation the College will accept are:

  • Certificates of completion
  • Activity logs
  • Transcripts
  • Letters of completion or attendance
  • Record of Attendance form
  • Study Summary form
  • Instructor Prep form
  • Record of Preceptorship form
  • Meeting minutes
  • Developed materials including published articles

Note: Receipts alone will not be accepted as valid course completion documentation.

Participation in the CC program is mandatory for all regulated members on the general register, regardless of employment status or practice setting. Exceptions: (i) Regulated members on the provisional and courtesy register do not have credit requirements. (ii) New regulated members added on the general register in the middle of a membership year, will not have any credit requirements for their first renewal.
