On July 2, 2025, Canadian Organization of Paramedic Regulators (COPR) implemented a new administrative policy which redefined candidate eligibility. Under COPR’s new policy, candidates are limited to three attempts to write the COPR exam, all of which must fall within one year of their paramedicine education program completion. If a candidate exceeds three attempts, or their one-year deadline, they are required to submit a COPR Eligibility Confirmation Letter from their provincial regulator approving their eligibility to attempt/reattempt the exam.

To align with COPR, the Alberta College of Paramedics is also updating our registration policies. Beginning on October 1, 2025, the College will only approve new applicants who complete their initial registration within one year of an approved paramedicine education program completion. New applicants can still initially apply for the Provisional register, which then allows for up to 18 months from registration to successfully pass the COPR exam and join the General register.

COPR candidates seeking a COPR Eligibility Confirmation Letter from the College must now be provisionally or generally registered before the Registrar will consider their eligibility. Moving forward, this is a firm requirement before the College will approve a candidate to write COPR past the one-year deadline, or beyond their first three attempts. It is an applicant’s responsibility to be aware of their own timeline for registration and apply for the Provisional or General register accordingly.
