I would like to begin this message by expressing my deep gratitude and appreciation to be stepping into the role of Council President. I do not take this role lightly and hope to lead Council and this profession with the integrity, strength and perseverance I see in each and every one of you. I would like to extend an immense thank you to my predecessor, Travis Lanoway. It has been an honour working alongside you and on behalf of Council, we wish you all the best.

I would also like to introduce our newest Council member, Mozac Samson. I look forward to working with you and I’m excited to see what this term on Council brings you. Attached below is a short bio for members to get to know him.

This was the second year in a row that we have filled Council vacancies through recruitment-based appointments. Once again, this new format proves that there is massive interest in joining Council and the previous election format was holding applicants back from putting their name forward. This year, we received 17 applications for the single Council vacancy. Although we could only appoint one member, I wish we could have appointed more. The talent, knowledge and expertise among the applicants speaks volumes to how diverse our membership is. I would also like to encourage each of you to continue getting involved and applying. Council and our committees need dedicated people like you advocating for the profession.

This past week Council began its new term with a productive two-day meeting. There are many things on the horizon which I’m excited to share over the coming year. As you may know, the College is working hard at establishing new EMR, PCP, ACP and CCP curriculums that will be used to advance the profession forward. With those new curriculums, we will be adopting the new Canadian Organization of Paramedic Regulators (COPR) Competency Framework.

I would like to remind everyone that the last day of renewal is Monday, September 30. You have until 4 pm that day to get your renewal application submitted and pay your registration fees to keep your practice permit active. College staff are available for questions over the phone, email or through a live chat on the website.

Finally, I would like to close by offering my sincere thank you to all of you and all of those who have supported me. I look forward to spending my last year on Council as President and would not be here if it wasn’t for the enormous support I have received over my career.

I hope you all enjoyed your summer and the warm weather and have found some time to relax with friends and family. Best of luck as we head into the 2024/2025 registration year.

Adam Swendsen, ACP
Council President

My name is Mozac, and I’m excited to join the Alberta College of Paramedics’ Council. With 12 years of experience as a front-line paramedic serving the Siksika Nation, and my current role as an Advanced Care Paramedic and Clinical Educator in the Calgary zone, I bring a unique perspective to Council. My recent work as a Site Manager at Carewest, overseeing more than 50 projects and collaborating with healthcare professionals across multiple disciplines, has built a strong foundation in leadership and teamwork.

I aim to bring a collaborative and diverse perspective to Council, contributing to the continued evolution of paramedicine. My goal is to support the profession’s growth in Alberta while upholding the College’s mission to maintain the highest standards of care and accountability.

In my spare time, I enjoy spending quality time with my spouse, Maria, and our three young children—Makoa, Malia and Mateo. I look forward to engaging with my fellow Council members and the broader paramedic community as we work together to strengthen the paramedic profession for the future.

I’m honored to be part of the College board and am committed to doing my best for the public and our members.

Mozac Samson, ACP, new Council member
