Nominate a peer for the EMS Exemplary Service Medal
The Alberta EMS Awards Committee receives nominations for the Emergency Medical Services (EMS) Exemplary Service Medal. The EMS Exemplary Service Medal is a federal medal created by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. It is administered by the Governor General of Canada with each province having a committee that receives, reviews and validates nominations. This is not simply a long‐service medal, it is meant to recognize the extraordinary contributions of EMS practitioners to paramedicine in pre‐hospital emergency medical service to the public for more than twenty years. To date, approximately 450 EMS practitioners in Alberta have received the EMS ESM medal and/or the subsequent bars.
Do you know someone in the Emergency Medical Service field who has demonstrated exemplary service for twenty or more years? Nominators, who can be peers or leaders, need to gather information about the nominee’s career, such as employment verification, and also be able to identify the exemplary nature of their service with letters of support. To access the nomination form and for more information visit www.abparamedicawards.ca.
Examples of exemplary service can include but are not limited to:
- A reputation of excellence
- Being a high‐quality mentor, preceptor & role model
- Consistent conduct & service worthy of the award
- Special projects & committee work
- Union/Association/College of Paramedics service
- Advancement of the EMS profession
- Community & volunteer service
The annual nomination deadline, in Alberta, is November 30 and the presentation generally takes place the following year. To learn more about the EMS Exemplary Service Medal, visit the Alberta EMS Awards Committee website at www.abparamedicawards.ca.
