Every regulated healthcare practitioner in Alberta must carry their own professional liability insurance – and paramedics are no different. As the regulator, we are always reminding members to update their policies each year, but we don’t often talk about why liability insurance is so important.

Personal professional liability insurance provides a safety net, covering legal fees and potential damages in case of allegations of negligence or malpractice. In a litigious society, where individuals are increasingly inclined to seek legal recourse, having this insurance becomes a prudent measure for paramedics safeguarding their professional reputation and financial well-being. It also ensures that the public is protected, in that they have a means for proper compensation in the unlikely event that they are negatively impacted by the care provided to them by our members.

As a regulated member with a requirement to hold active and valid insurance, it’s important to know what your policy covers and have a general understanding of the protection available to you. Each policy must meet our minimum requirements, outlined in the Bylaws and list below, but we encourage each of you to review your policy. Make sure that it meets the minimum requirements but also see what other protections are covered under your plan.

  • Errors and Omissions Liability: $5,000,000 per claim and annual aggregate;
  • Abuse Errors & Omissions Liability (including Criminal Defense): $50,000 per claim, $100,000 annual aggregate;
  • Disciplinary Legal Expenses: $50,000 per claim, $100,000 annual aggregate; and
  • Breach of Confidentiality: $5,000,000 per claim, $5,000,000 annual aggregate
