Some recent changes have been implemented to the CC program to improve clarity and offer credits to newly approved activities.
Spreading out the CC audit
Rather than conducting one large-scale Continuing Competence audit each year, the College will now be conducting three smaller-scale CC audits per year. The same total number of members will be audited, but now you may be randomly selected for audit in October, January or March. By spreading out the process over the year, each audit should run even more smoothly.
Precepting
Both primary and secondary preceptors can now claim Continuing Education (CE) hours for precepting hours, as outlined below.
- 1 ACP Student = 20 CE credits
- 2 ACP Students = 40 CE credits
- 3 ACP Students = 60 CE credits
- 1 PCP Student = 10 CE credits
- 2 PCP Students = 20 CE credits
- 3 PCP Students = 30 CE credits
To enter the activity into your CC form, use ‘Preceptorship’ as the search term.
Activity types
When entering Self-Directed (SD) activities, members will now choose an “activity type” first and then enter the name of their activity. This change will streamline the system by clarifying the hours any given SD activity qualifies for.
Claiming activities separately
Members are now required to enter each claimed activity separately, even those that fall under a similar umbrella. For example, rather than summarizing multiple separate workplace activities as “30 hours of workplace training”, members will need to enter each activity and their allotted hours separately. This change will greatly expedite the audit process.
Research, Development and Curriculum
While instructing hours are not eligible to claim for any CC credits, curriculum development and/or research required prior to instructing can now be claimed as an SD activity under the ‘Research, Development & Curriculum’ activity type.
Other things to keep in mind heading into renewal:
- The last box in your renewal application submission will have you attest that all information provided is true and accurate. Please take a moment to reflect sincerely on this statement before completing your submission, as your attestation will be considered consequentially in the case of an audit.
- You can find and reference the most current approved CE list and the list of Self-Directed definitions at any time on the CC page in your portal under ‘Reports’, or on the member’s site under CC.
- Before entering any CC activity, whether CE or SD, ensure the activity has been fully completed and you have your certificate or other proof of completion documentation. Uploading these documents during renewal is optional, but if you are randomly selected for an audit, you will then be required to upload proof of every activity you claimed. We recommend you upload your certificates during renewal so that if you are audited at a later date, the process is as simple as possible.
- Only the exact course on the approved CE list can be claimed for CE credits. That is, activities by different sources that cover the same or similar topics as an approved CE activity cannot be claimed as CE. These activities can only be entered into the Self-Directed category.
