On November 23 it was announced that the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine was available for children aged 5 through 11 years old. Since that announcement, the College has received many questions about how that impacts PCPs with their ability to administer the COVID-19 vaccines.

Can PCPs administer the COVID-19 vaccine to children 5-11 years old?

A PCP who has completed the approved training and obtained the endorsement on their practice permit to administer the vaccine, is able to administer it to this new age group.

The approved training was announced in August and is through Alberta Health Services. More information on the training can be found here. If a PCP does not have the endorsement on their practice permit, they cannot administer the vaccine to anyone regardless of completing the training. The College must have received the proof of completion and provided the endorsement before regulated members can perform the restricted activity. More information on Administering a Vaccine can be found in the Standards of Practice 4.1.2 or in the Practice Guideline -Vaccine Administration.
